We have some talented writers here on the staff of ActiveRain (present company excluded). Between the staff, you'd think we would be able to come up with a succinct 'About us' description; something that really nails the essence of the community. Alas, after hundreds of drafts, thousands of red pen marks and way too many hours spent trying to nail the perfect 'About us', we have decided to solicit your help.
At the bottom of every page on ActiveRain is the 'about' link. The introduction on that page gives everyone who ever wanted to learn about our community their first introduction to who we are. You can imagine why it's so hard to nail it. What ActiveRain is about to you may not be the same as the person with whom you are battling for first in your city. In fact, ask twenty different people and you are likely to get 20 different answers.
We need you to help us write the 'about us' language for ActiveRain.
You can find the current 'about us' piece here at the top of that page.
The winning selection will agree to let ActiveRain have the rights to the submission and we will use it not only on the about page, but in lots of stuff we do in the future.
The winning selection also gets:
- 5000 ActiveRain points
- Two ActiveRain T-shirts
- A Localism Jacket
- Our love and adoration
- A free yearlong sponsorship of a community on Localism
- A free pass to kick off anyone else on ActiveRain that you choose (OK, this one is a joke.......but too good to resist)
A few things to consider:
- All entries must be submitted by Wednesday October 8th at 11:59pm Pacific Time.
- We are looking for something between 150-200 words (2 paragraphs). The more succinct the better.
- All entries become the property of ActiveRain (I'm not a lawyer, but the idea is we want the right to use the stuff you write)
- Entries should be sent to bob at the name of this website or through the contact link on my ActiveRain profile page

I want the ability to kick 4 people off of AR.
Ha this look like a fun one. Will have to give it a try!
Only 1? What about 1 hour with the smite button?
Better add Broker X, I mean Jeff... that's the first thing I noticed.
Hey Bob - You should also give bonus points to those who can write the best biography on each of us. hehe :-)
You have jackets? There are some wonderful writters here so this will be a great contest.
I don't need to kick anyone off...you guys do your job well...if need be.
Okay... this ought to be interesting. :)
P.S. Do we post it on AR or just submit it to you?
I never win contests, and swore off of them..............but for the ability to kick one person off, and ya'lls love and admiration, I'll think about it. LOL
About Active Rain...
Once upon a time there were a few people who wrote real estate blog posts and commented on eachother's posts. Then I woke up the next day and there were over 112k members and oodles of posts and commenters. Yeee Haw!
And I thought you guys loved all of us....
:-)
Sally,
Please submit it directly to me
WAIT, STOP THE PRESSES...........
Ladies and Gentlemen, it looks like we already have a winner, XBroker's wonder twin @mizzle!! :-P
I sent you a few questions. I like this idea. It will be interesting to see.
One thing I noticed. Matt Heaton's bio has a grammatical error. Sorry Im not mr. grammar either. It just stuck out reading it.
I'm too sleepy...yikes!
Bob,
I am about to post the winning entry in a couple of minutes!!! Thanks, Fran
Can we enter more than once? What's 2nd prize? haha
With all of the talent in the Active Rain Gods they couldn't write an about me page? Just kidding...sounds like fun!
I just emailed you the winning entry! :-)
Is there a first one in prize????
I don't have an About Us, Bob but how about a User Testimonial?
"Active Rain is like waking up hungover, hoisting your perspiring largess to the other side of your drooled pillow to find the wispy blonde woman with the corrective shoes who cuts your deli meats extra girthy at the corner deli.
'Oh no, I didn't'
Yet you did. Now you're here so you stumble downstairs. Your lazy lab with that rotating oogling glass eye sizes you up. The phone rings and it's your boss and he's screaming in a half Armenian half Chicago accent about missing computers.
There's a stack of ink smeared parking tickets on your 69' GTO with the Road Runner steering wheel cover. Once upon a time you sold real estate, sporting dress shirts in 100% Egyptian cotton blend.
Now you're all chafed around your edges from the Polyester of your new wardrobe. Even the expensive men's cologne smells like English Leather.
Of your once sullied position and addiction to AR you reminisce about the free homemade struedel at the Open Houses, the nickel-plated American lapel flags and the weird, wacky and wonderful personalities that wander in here, lay on the futons and flick pencils into the overhead ceiling tiles."
.............kinda makes you wish you posted Members Only?
Bob,
I would like to see the submissions posted as a comment on this page. Would you consider changing the rules to allow for this?
Bob - This is an intriguing contest - I will work on it, too. While we're at it, someone really needs to clean up the text here on this link, which appears on the blog entry page (in addition to typos, it is not clearly written):
What posts get points
I would do this just for #4 Bob ! Of course I have no problem giving you some free advertising, so go ahead and send me the stuff and I'll wear it around for ya - no charge ;)
Can I get a few extra points for noticing that :
cw
Ah...I like Andrew's idea...user testimonials... I did mine awhile back.
I'll leave the stories for others...but can I make a suggestion to put buttons on the bottom....so everyone can see it clearly? Those gray words below are too light. Us older folk who are in denial with glasses can't see them too good :)
Do you like it????
I'm glad I clicked that silly little box - there was a Lenza sighting! woohoo
now will somebody open the window and get that aftershave stink outta here?
I like Lenza's version. How can we compete with his twisty way with words??? You know I'm a fan.
Bob - I just saw Jon's suggestion above. I emailed you, but here's my entry:
Welcome to the ActiveRain Real Estate Network! If you have been looking for a new and valuable FREE tool to help grow your real estate or mortgage business, you have certainly come to the right place.
But how can you accomplish this here?

Join us today - you'll be glad you did!
Bob, this is quite the challenge. I have gotten to know most of you but not all. I think I could peg a couple of you and the rest are an enigma. This is a challenge. If the BLOCK doesn't set in I'll try it.
The team at Active Rain deserves the absolute best. Good luck receiving it! What a great idea.
Later in the rain~Deb
Okay, if I ditto Jason or work with him to tweak it, can we split the 5K?!!
Hooray another contest! The one Brad did last week (or was it 2 weeks?) was really fun!!! Jason, no fair that you posted what could be the winning entry already on the comments! So, I'm with Debe, can I ditto him also because I think it was a great description of this place :)

Bob... Sounds like a great challenge.... I'm sure you are going to find what you are looking for. I will brainstorm myself.... On my.. can I do this ?
Lenza,
I know you are done with AR, but I would love to see what you would come up with on this one.
Bob.... I will forgo all the prizes, only if I can have the Active Rain Van.... well, I was trying to find Jonathan's picture of his green van, but I couldn't find it.
What a cool idea, Bob - let the community define itself...and rethink what this network means to us at the same time! Thanks.
This looks fun, I'll have to try it;p
I think this is a great contest, and you already have a couple of great entries from which to choose.
Very intriguing. I will have to think about that one.
I have dibs on "It was a dark and stormy night" or was that another contest?
I see - so we're doing it here in the comments are we........hmmm i'll have to ponder this - went and checked out your current About Us -......saw Jeff's photo isn't up yet.....ok i'm going to go sharpen my pencil....
Very cool... I may actually behave long enough to try this. ;-)
Interesting challenge. 150-200 words to explain a rewarding, addictive mistress? It can't be done. Okay, well maybe it can, but as you're related, certainly not easily.
With this many heads put together the final product should be really good.
Now this is quite the challenge. Nice to see Andrew still pops in now and then. :)
Submission currently in draft. Thank you for the opportunity.
Hi Bob,
What a wonderful opportunity and challenge for AR members to have the opportunity to contribute in this way. I know several who have the writing and creative ability to nail this for you--let's see who gets the job done.
Conest?
Never mind the contest, where do I get my ActiveRain/Localism Gear. Can I put in an order for a localism jacket, 2 "I love Bob Stewart" T-shirts, 3 pair of Active Rain Jeans (size 38) and one pair of blogging sneakers. That will be all for this order :)
Have a great day
Leander
Looks interesting---I wonder if I can get the c reative juices flowing?
I think this is a wonderful idea and a great way to bring the community together. Im not a fantastic writer so sure my entry wont make it far out of file 13 but Ill give it a try.
This is a great idea. The current about us is not a fun reading. I am expecting a better one.
Bob,
I sent you a message through the AR mail system.
I love Jason Crouch's entry, and added a little something extra that I think will really help. I'm not after the points, which I mentioned in my message, but would love a FEATURE for a specific purpose, of which I also expounded upon in my message...that is, if you implement my suggestion and award me a partial credit!
~ Greg ~
As soon as I read the Kick Someone Off, I knew the comments would be good! Maybe you should post the top 5 and let US vote on the winner????
I like #6
A free pass to kick off anyone else on ActiveRain that you choose (OK, this one is a joke.......but too good to resist
I am just kidding, could not resist either.
WOW! This is going to be a great contest. I would hate to have to judge this, for sure! I am looking forward to reading more entries. Off to a good start, for sure!
I love Jeff Belongers idea of an Active Rain bus!!! Can we get one? :) Hummm...I am getting an idea. THAT can be scary!
I may have to give it a try, and I agree I am sure the Rain is perceived differently for each of us!
My question is whe43n did you come up with Jackets...we saw the T-shirts LOL :) I'm greedy I don't want to split any points so guess I'll have to write my own ....:) who's the Judege....Are we describing us or you?
::TAPE BEGINS TO PLAY::
"Elizabeth Nieves...IF you are listening to the sound of my voice, you have been chosen for a very important, top secret mission. Located in the beautiful city of Bellevue, WA...there is a team of very talented, highly successful men who have used up all of their designated words for the day. Should you accept this mission, your job will be to find just the right words to summarize the 'who' and 'what' of their highly clandestine organization. This tape will self-destruct in 5...4...3...2...1"
:-) GBU!
Wow this is quite the contest, I'm almost in awe of the competition. But I'll give this some thought and through in my submission. BTW. Got to love Elizabeth's comment!
I haven't written it yet, but I'm thinking I should win, for these reasons alone.
1. I'm the best looking agent in the rain, so clearly the shirts would look good on me.
2. What does someone from Florida or Arizona need with a jacket anyway.
3. I already have your love and admiration!
4. I'll do it for NO POINTS! You have given so much to me, I think it is the least I can do to give back.
5. I'll take the localism sponsorship though, I won't kick anyone off the Activerain Island.
Those are the reasons I should win despite not actually have written anything to deserve winning yet, but I know I'm good so it will win anyway. I just hope I don't depress any cows in Eastern Washington while writing about you.
This looks like a fun challenge and I am okay with AR using my winning entry. I think a residual fee , paid in points per view would be a reasonable fee to charge for that. See you soon!
I am new to this community but being that cleaning up is my business I am going to give this a try.
Watch out folks!
How do we post back the response for you?
Sounds like a great contest! and you have jackets???? hmmm
Laughing so hard @ Todd that I just sprayed my water across the table.
Todd...I don't know why any of us would even bother competing with you. Your list of 5 reasons you should win clearly knocks the rest of us out of line. JK...move over buddy! You've met your match. I am woman...hear me ROAR!!! ;-)
Bob,
I will see what I can come up with!
Bob, seems like a lot to say in only two paragraphs!
ActiveRain - "It doesn't give you weeping lip sores like meth!"
Jeez... do I miss Lenza. LOL. Keep your points, t-shirt and love and adoration. I'll take an hour with the smite button, please. :)
Yes we have Jackets......but they are really only track jackets.......the sporty type like a sweatshirt......
Submissions should be emailed to me. bob at activerain dot com or through the 'contact' link on my profile
Paul,
That is the slogan, not the about us. The new ActiveRain T-shirt is already using that one :-)
Leander,
I've been trying to convince Jon that "I Love Bob Stewart" t-shirts will sell for quite some time now. Alas, he thinks my head would never fit through the neck hole.
Todd,
After that list, all you need to do is submit anything!
Lenza,
When that happens to me (and I've been close a few times) I will be giving up ActiveRain as well. Your testimonial has shed quite a bit of light on your actions. (and thanks for stopping by)
Elizabeth,
Paul Slaybaugh has recently been sending ticking packages to my office. If you could refrain from any sort of countdown references on my posts in the future, it may thwart this ulcer I am developing.
A Localism jacket.... LMAO No offense, but that sounds pretty lame.
I am envisioning Bob Stewart strutting around in a blue denim jacket with "Localism" embroidered on the back in black lettering with gold sequins.
Submitted mine, but I know it will be tough to just pick one since I imaging morphing several ideas to come up with a killer one! You of course are welcome to just use mine however.
I don't think I can participate in this one, I have a hard enough time coming up with my own decent content. You Don't want me Butchering yours too! :)
here is a suggestion, since you already seem to have a couple of very real contenders with 2 of these posts (although I like the 2nd one noted the consumer element too). Now that agents have seen a couple of examples of good writing on an "about us" topic - take this as a lesson for your personal website and spend the time to create one for yourself!
cheers, - Reba
Great Contest Bob....but I never got the T-shirt that I was supposed to get the last time (Localism sponsoring) .....hmmmmm?? Did Brad steal my AR T-shirt?
Bob, there are some wacky members out there and that suits me fine, I will produce my thoughts for king and country..Steve
WidowMaker...
I'll leave this to the newer Members. It's good practice for them. I'll take the love and adoration though :)
TLW...ROAR!
Now this sounds like like quite the challenge. I may give this a shot if I can get my head back.
Glad you gave a long enough deadline!
No picking winners until I get my shot at the Localism Jacket!
I'll be back...
Seems like a worthy goal for a contest - I look forward to seeing the best entries!
Wow Bob, 5,000 points is an exceptional prize. Can I convert them to frequent flyer miles ?? : )
Holy crap! I was ramping up to enter this contest when I read LeRnza's fantastic entry. Who can argue that it doesn't get anymore succinct than that? Gosh I miss that rat!
I vote that Elizabeth Nieves writes it and I get exempt for life from E VER getting kicked out….
Or
...Come one come all - there’s actually a community called ActiveRain. Here you’ll find penmanship like never before coming from a Real Estate community OR agent near you or anywhere else for that matter. Yes that’s right – rants, tear jerker stories, what you should do – what you shouldn’t do – stories of naked people appearing during a showing, how to be a better person, realtor, friend, dog admirer, handy man, mortgage lender even chief. How to sell your house, stage your house, show your house, HOW NOT to sell your house, stage your house, show your house… and all for the amazing price of free.
Welcome to my world, my community, my ActiveRain!
Raleigh Realtor – Pamela St. Peter
I love a friendly challenge. BRING IT ON
if Todd is the best looking agent in the rain----why doesn't he have his picture posted on his profile/blog?? oh - I liked JPT's entry :)
I can't wait to try this one on for size.. Of course I write some pretty stupid blogs BUT I LOVE THE RAIN>
I swore no more contests but I can't resist! I'm in.
Sure I will give it a try. I like a good challenge. Oh! wait I think I left something on the stove. What were we talking about again. Just kidding!!!
All right, I give up, you guys write better sfuff than me, I could not possibly compete for the top honors of this contest, so instead I am sending here my contribution to whomever wins, maybe if we all do that someone really sits down and write something we all like.
Antonio
Oh Kara,
That was simple, I had to remove my picture because too many people were distracted by it and they couldn't read my posts to the end, they just kept looking back at the picture and then 3 hours later when someone tapped them on the shoulder to bring them back to the real world, they knew my picture had to be removed for safety reasons. (LOL)
Todd is cracking me up!!!
hahahahahaaaaa!!!!
This looks like a good contest -- Lots of prizes here -- I can't wait to see the entries.
A real challenge! Can't we have your love and adoration + a free T-shirt for participating?
Bob...
I have to admit "It does need some work, desperately :-). As slow as I've been lately I'll try to make the deadline, I could write a novel about y'all (all great stuff too...mostly). Very clever going to the members for their input, this is a creative group. L
I promise that I did not pay Pamela for that comment!! LOL
I DO have an idea, though. IF I don't win...can I at least design the 'I Love Bob Stewart' tshirts? PWEEEEEEESEEEEEEEEEEEE????? ;-)
I'm in. Now I have to think what active rain is really all about.
Unfortunately I'm not a talented writer either but, motivated by the generous rewards being offered, felt compelled to contribute to such a worthy cause. Thanks for the opportunity.
Rendering the written word is always a challenge for me, so coming up with something succinct "About ActiveRain" was even more so.
I would guess by the number of comments so far that you're going to get many submissions; best of luck with the judging.
I just emailed the winner in ..ha ha. Hard to get it into just a few words....it will be fun to read them!
Welllll... I'll have to get on it right now. Did you think I was going to leave it here for others to pick.... Come on... I need a little time to get the writing flowing.
Well since we are doing this, can Activerain finally implement my warning label?
I have been requesting this for months now...
I love a good challenge and that 5,000 points, hummmm, tempting...
I love a good challenge and that 5,000 points, hummmm, tempting...
great idea
I'll give it a shot...Where do we submit our entries?
Geeze, Lenza, you ghost...LOL! Miss ya buddy!
I don't know, this is tough competition.
BTW- did someone mention Andrew Lenza? I heard he was the ghost of AR Past.
Wow - this is a great idea! I am sure that you will be deluged with great pieces and I do not envy you trying to pick one! I'm in!
Just emailed my entry off Bob. Pick Me Pick Me!! LOL
Jason's entry is great! I vote for that one!
Thanks for the opportunity!
I too would like a chance to read the submissions in this comment area!!!!
Great idea to incorporate the members who are making this community the success that you meant for it to be ! :-)
Who could compete with Jason's entry? This is daunting... there are too many great writers on Active Rain.
How about if I win you just hand me 3 new listings and 2 new buyers....I appreciate it!!
Thanks!
What a neat idea!
Michael
What a neat idea!
Michael
Bob...would hate to have to be the folks making the final decision. Good luck.
Oooo. Love and adoration! I want me some of that! =P These contests are always such tall orders. To be honest, they make me tired just thinking about writing them, let alone actually have an idea and following through. Even my regular posts take me hours, most of the time. I wish I could just come up with an idea and follow through on the spot. But my brain doesn't work that way =( I have an artistic mind. I have to be feeling creative and motivated if I want to do a good job on these.
I like the idea of a smite button. Seriously this is a great contest. can you post your favorites even after you pick a winner? I am curious-Dinah
This looks like its going to be an enigma wrapped in a conundrum.
Good luck to everyone who's taking part in this very important contest. This is definetely going to a good cause.
Bob - cool idea, and you have spurred lots of interest. Not sure my own creativity is up to the challenge but I will mull it over. Who knows when a brainstorm might hit.
Jeff
I like Lee & Pamela's input. Active Rain is so much more than business. To me AR is about people sharing, crying, learning. Somewhere to go after a long hard day and get a laugh or two. Along with being a great business resource which it is I would like to see included more of the personal touch and passion that the members express everyday on AR.
great idea - who better to describe Active Rain than the users.
Bob~
THIS is quite a challenge. How does one put into just a few words the extreme value of the Team and creative output of Active Rain...? I'll give it a shot...just to say THANK YOU...you say email you?
I might have to take a crack at this. 5000 points would be fun... And after a nice weekend without a cell phone, I might have some patience.
Aloha Bob, I just e-mailed you my feeble attempt at this to you.

Hi Bob
Just submitted my two-cents' worth. Hope you and AR like it.
i'm glad it was changed to pacific time. still have a couple hours to finish my draft entry from 5 days ago.
WOW! I've checked out the competition and I can't compete! I've been trying for 4 days straight and can't come up with anything close to what I've seen from others.
I give, but I still would look good in a shirt!
This is for you, Todd! ;-)

"Our Vision is to help professionals achieve success and grow their business by utilizing the tools available to them specifcally through social interaction. Through this process our hope is that one can become a more complete "Real Estate 2.0 Professional"
I admit, I haven't read all 135 comments, but do we know when the winner will be announced?
This was mine:
Seattle is the home of innovative ideas and Active Rain was one of these six year ago. Today it is a thriving community of real estate professionals that write about the industry, technology, cities and communities, and the daily life of a real estate professional.
While it is the largest social network, it is a place for consumers to find most of the answers to selling and buying real estate and for realtors to grow in knowledge and in relationships.
Bob,
I keep checking the mail everyday for my wearables from Active Rain...Have you forgotten my size...XXLarge...!!! LOL, Thanks, Fran
I thought it was over on the 8th?
Thank you everyone!!
The contest did end on the 8th Sally. However, we got TONS of great entries and going through them and picking something that captures the essence of our community is TOUGH!!
We are probably going to take our three or four favorites and put them up for vote. I'll have something out before long. Just when you almost forget about it, I'll bring it back to life :-)
Okay Bob - enough already, stop starring this post and write something new.
If I win the contest give all the points to Sandra Cummings
Signed Andrew Lenza
Bob,
Sandra is up to no good! LOL
Active Rain,
Simplicity is best. It doesn't take paragraphs or pages to explain why Active Rain is the best place in the USA to understand Real Estate...
It's very simple. . .
Active Rain is Real Estate simple...basically from the ground up! What ever you need you can find, if you have a question regarding Real Estate, just ask and someone will get back to you within 24 hours. There are no questions we can't answer, best regards to all...Active Rain.
need help picking a winner?? I'm available.
Cynthia - I have no idea what you are talking about : -)
LOL. Some of these comments are hilarious. And are you sure you won't reconsider #6? I'd really love that one!
I missed the deadline on this. Who are the winners? I mean it is the 21st if Oct. Maybe they will announce it by Mon.
Bob, Thanks for the great post.
At the Ann Arbor Blogging session and you know you made me do this.
"A free pass to kick off anyone else on ActiveRain that you choose (OK, this one is a joke.......but too good to resist") - there is something soothing knowing you guys are just like us, lol.
Bob,
I've been playing around.
When entering into AR as a consumer and landing on someones blog site... when I searched my market area using the lefthand side search area from that persons blog.... I ended up landing on a " Just Listed.com" site and not my own or any other Hampstead REALTORS IDX. I did this repeatedly and only found the Just Listed.com site...
Not sure why?
Hi Bob, have y'all had any luck picking a winner yet?
Nice. When is the deadline. Funny stuff on so far.
Rather than have my contest submission and the time I took go to waste I decided to post it:
http://activerain.com/blogsview/1782121/have-you-ever-been-asked-what-s-activerain-
