ActiveBob.....It's always Raining!

head_left_image

Video killed the text search star? Nope, the text search star adapted!!

I have the utmost respect for Lenn Harley. I am convinced that she never ever leaves her computer. The degree to which she manufacturers post on ActiveRain borders on staggering. In fact, I have dreamed that she has a little factory of umpa-lumpas typing away and making maps all day long. And it's not just the shear volume......it's the quality of the posts. When I hear the call that ActiveRain should be featuring more 'hard core' real estate content, I usually think to myself, "well get ready for a BIG dose of Lenn Harley"

Over the weekend, she dipped her toe into a little fray that I had the good fortune of missing. (I was on a golf weekend with the boys). If you missed it, you can find it here, here, and here. We always talk about these sort of things after they play out, especially when one of ours is taken to task. (you'll have to read if you want the details). We decided that when it was all said and done, there were a lot of statements that were right, many that were wrong and a few that were just personal strategy decisions that don't really have a right or wrong answer.

One thing that I wanted to touch on, because it is near and dear to my heart is a contention that Lenn made about video. Here is what Lenn wrote:

Gadgets and Video. Another detrimental trend is the continued focus on non-Google friendly gadgets and platforms. If anything is going to diminish our Google juice, it will be the introduction of Google alien gadgets including video. Video is fun. Video is cute. Video is NOT Google friendly. The more bandwidth devoted to video and other Google alien gadgets, the less Google synergy ActiveRain will enjoy. Just because we can is no reason to do things.

I want everyone to understand something.......nobody KNOWS exactly what Google is going to do. Tomorrow, Google could say, "The world is flat, and if you have anything on your website that insinuates anything other than the world is flat, we are blacklisting you." Are they going to do that? Of course not.....but they could. People's best guesses (don't get me wrong, they are certainly educated guesses) are based on what they have seen in the past. People also make guesses based on patents that google file. But Google files a lot of patents!! And sometimes, (gasp!) they don't even file a patent, because someone else already filed it years ago and they just swoop in and buy them! (there is a rumor floating around they are flush with cash.......can anyone confirm this?)

The last thing I am is an internet history buff, but I'll bet there was a time when Google didn't index those bandwidth hogging images (pictures). Somewhere along the line, some really smart guy or gal at Google said "Hey, let's figure out a way to index images"..........and it was done. Which leads me to video............

Video is fun. Video is cute. Video is NOT Google friendly........YET!! (which isn't even totally true) There is a great article on SearchEngineLand that details the Google Universal and Google Video search products. You should go read it right now. The day is quickly approaching when Google WILL index video and integrate those results in the normal Google searches your clients use to find you. They will index it thoroughly. If they don't........someone else will, and that someone else will quickly become a leader in the Internet Search field. My guess is that if those rumors of Google being flush with cash are true, there is no way on this flat earth they will let someone else beat them to the punch.

So you can either choose to ignore video and focus on text, which will certainly bring you results (as it has for SOOOOO many to date) or you can decide that you are going to figure out how to incorporate video into your marketing plan now. If you choose the latter, you'll be in a pretty sweet position when Google decides that a video is worth at least 1000 words (and it will happen).

(I couldn't resist putting this video in......in has ZERO bearing on this conversation......but it might just be the cutest thing my kid has done so far.......and I missed it because I was down in Atlanta at the RETechSouth Conference...........and yes, that's him at center court!)

ActiveRain site issues fixing stuff (official post thingy)

Individual commitment to a group effort -- that is what makes a team work, a company work, a society work, a civilization work.

- Vince Lombardi -

At times over the past few weeks ActiveRain has been slow and even sometimes unresponsive.  I want everyone to know that we know about the problems and take them very seriously. Our members invest themselves to create content with the hopes that it will eventually reach their customers or other industry professionals. It is our calling and responsibility to ensure that we maintain the platform so that when your customers and colleagues try to find you, they can.

We are very dedicated to fixing our site stability problems and have invested significant resources towards this goal. The root cause of the problem has been the significant consumer traffic increases that we have been experiencing on a month over month basis; we are now seeing over 1.5 million visits to ActiveRain each month! We initially built this community on a shoestring budget so at times during our initial growth we had to take shortcuts just to make things work.  We are paying for those shortcuts now, but the good news is that we now have the funding to build the infrastructure correctly, and we have made significant progress on that front over the past 5 months.

I see the light at the end of the tunnel.  Below is a list of our current initiatives. They make up what we believe to be the final tasks to bringing ActiveRain to the robust professional level where it needs to be:

1. We are in the process of upgrading the hardware on all of our
servers, which should substantially improve performance.  At the same
time we are also doubling the number of web servers.

2. We've contracted with another firm to provide 24 hour a day
maintenance and support for our systems.  They will be able to react
to any issues that come up much faster, and will also be working with
us to make sure the system as a whole is stable.

3. We've moved some of our development resources from new projects to
fixing a few issues that have been identified.

My heartfelt thanks go to all of you for engaging your peers and your clients through ActiveRain. The near future holds some great opportunities and with your involvement we will move the real estate world forward.

Inaugural Real Estate Top Blog Index: March 2008

Introducing the Real Estate Blog Index! This is the inaugural index, so my list is incomplete and I am eagerly hoping for submission of blogs to add to my list.

The Rules:

  1. Blog must be about real estate.
  2. The URL must be ranked individually on Alexa and Compete. (For instance a blog address of sethgodin.typepad.com would not be allowed because the typepad.com domain is the site that is being ranked. This applies to all inside ActiveRain blogs as well; sorry.)
  3. The blog must drive the majority of traffic to the domain name. (For instance although Bloodhoundrealty.com is a real estate brokerage, it is my opinion that the Bloodhound blog drives a majority of the sites traffic.)

Seth Thinks Firefox is a gateway drug.......

I couldn't agree more. In fact, if you aren't using Firefox as your browser, do yourself a favor and stop reading right this minute and go download it..............I'm serious, stop reading. (Hey, what are you doing? You don't know what's good for you do you? You are the one who would crawl over to the fireplace and try to touch the glass after mom and dad had repeatedly told you not to.)

If for no other reason, I guarantee that your experience on ActiveRain will be better if you go download Firefox. Things around here just look better.

Seth reasons......

".. everywhere you look, if someone is using Firefox, they're way more likely to be using other power tools online. The reasoning: In order to use Firefox, you need to be confident enough to download and use a browser that wasn't the default when you first turned on your computer.

That's an empowering thing to do. It isolates you as a different kind of web user."

Get out from underneath the thumb of our Redmond neighbors. Become empowered. You will thank me later.........

(the day is approaching that I will start every 'can you show me how to do xxxx' conversation with "Do you use Firefox?")

ActiveRain Video Contest Results - Rome wasn't built in a day

It almost goes without saying (but if you've read me before, I have no problem stating the obvious) that ActiveRain isn't the first company to encourage you to start using video in your marketing. The buzz about video has been out there for a while now. As it picks up speed though, we want to be an integral part of helping the real estate industry integrate video into your business plan.

We moved very swiftly three weeks ago to put together a contest that encouraged our members to start thinking about using video. The reward? A day with Seth Godin in New York on April 30th. We just wanted you to start to think about using video. We wanted you to see what your peers are doing with video. We wanted to see what came bubbling to the surface when you were put against the wall (but the prize was cool enough to 'do something').

We got pretty much what we expected. We got some great ingenuity, we got solid examples of how people are currently using video in their business. We got first timers deciding they would toss aside their hesitations and be bold. We got high quality production, we got the epitome of user generated. The thing is......we think there is a place for all of these types of video in your marketing bag (everyone started somewhere once, right?). Together, over the coming months we will come together as a community and help raise the level of all the videos that we create.

The bar has been set. High? Low? Let's just say, on average, we have room for improvement. Speaking of room......there is room for lots more of you to jump on board. A special thank you to everyone who participated. You are brave. You are forward thinking. You are a leader. I have no question as we move forward and we teach each other, learn from each other, and help each other, we will collectively raise the quality of our video offerings.

Now, don't get me wrong, there were some really good submissions, a number of them in fact..........and after our judges deliberated, held a round table, had one minor squabble (Sara from Zillow throws a mean right hook.......ask Rudy from Trulia) and hammered out their decision......

(and let me just add here. Even our judges didn't all agree. So this has taught me that what appeals to one person, doesn't always strike a cord with someone else. I think on the whole, our judges did great and I want to personally thank Marc, Sara, Rudy, Dustin and Joel, Thank you!!)

So without more useless blabbering from me further ado.........the winner is.............

Mike Lefebrve and his video Steak out in Franklin

Congratulatons Mike and I really hope that you have an unbelievable day with Seth Godin in NYC. I'm totally jealous!!

The two runner-ups (in no particular order) and winners of Flip Video Camera's are:

Annie and Bob Pacieznik: a name in real estate you might not be able to pronounce but can certainly trust

and

Brian Block: Look who's buying a home

I hope that 3000 points is a decent consolation for everyone that threw their hat in the ring. The judging was very tight and who knows, if Rudy could have taken that right hook from Sara, things could have turned out completely different.

Trulia and Google give Street View Street Smarts!

They say that a picture is worth a 1000 words. Well, if that's the case, then Trulia just cornered the Word market!

In their continuing efforts to become the Real Estate "Go-To" site, Trulia has recently partnered with Internet Goliath, Google, in implementing their 'Street View' application.

Google Street View is a feature of Google Maps that was introduced in 2007 and provides 360° panoramic street-level views. It allows users to view parts of selected cities and their surrounding metropolitan areas at ground level. When it was originally launched, only five cities were included. It has since expanded to more than 40 U.S. cities, and includes the suburbs of many, and in some cases, other nearby cities (For the list of cities currently available, GO HERE).

So, in addition to being one of the premier home listing aggregation sites; offering excellent source information relevant to real estate; and providing a forum for consumers and real estate professionals to interact, the inclusion of Google Street View (referred to as "Walk the Neighborhood" by Trulia) allows Trulia Users the opportunity to view high-resolution, street-level 360° captured shots of prospective neighborhoods/homes.

Now your Buyers can see that HUGE water tank next door. Or maybe the description of a 'filtered' or 'partial' view by the Listing Agent gives new meaning to embellishment. And who knew that the Next-Door-Neighbor was a Used Car/Appliance collector? You can begin to see the value that this incorporated feature will offer.

I especially like the way Trulia has streamlined the integration of Street-View into their platform, and incorporated it into each listing where the service is available.

And, as is typical with Trulia, ease-of-navigation is very straight-forward and seemless.

Kudos once again to the folks at Trulia for bringing further enhanced value to their platform, and providing more useful tools for consumers.

Unofficial new ActiveRain blog customizer

So word on the street is that someone was able to hijack the AR code base and they are now making it possible for ActiveRainers to 'myspace' their ActiveRain blog.

I am dying to see what our members have done with this new ability, but since this type of activity has not been officially sanctioned I cannot make a directory featuring all of the creative Rainers that have taken advantage of this new discovery.

So the only option I have left is to create an ActiveRain Blacklist; a list of all of the most aggressive rule benders in our network.  These are the type of people that are always on the cutting edge, always finding some way to capitalize on a new technology to make more money.  These are the type of people that we really need to watch closely.

This blog post will serve to become the official ActiveRain Blacklist and will show the first 25 custom ActiveRain blogs that are submitted to me, or I find through my own research. (Please note: my personal research will include the use of my super secret agent police force.)

Depending on which direction we formally take regarding these custom ActiveRain blogs, the members exposed on this list will either be permanently banned from ActiveRain, or given a few hundred bonus points.

_____

Before I get to the list, I would like to draw attention to the type of custom design that will not receive bonus points under any circumstance!

_____

The ActiveRain Blacklist:

1. Brad Carroll (the linchpin of this revolution)

2. Bobby Carroll (the linchpin's father)

3. Nicole Nicolay

4. Brad Andersohn

6. Kevin Tomlinson

7. Courtney Cooper

8. Julie Neerings

Who sets the tone?

I probably call 10 members a day (give or take) every day. I do it for a variety of reasons. Some of the time it's because I have read something particularly moving they have written and I want to say thanks. Sometimes it is because I see something they are doing in their blog they could be doing better and I want to offer advice. Sometimes it's because I am lonely and I need someone to talk to (haha, that last one was a joke, not to make light of the plight of the lonely, but this job doesn't really make that an option).

Almost every time I get ready to pick up the phone, I am faced with a decision. Call them at the office or on their cell phone. If it's someone I have spoke with prior, I will generally go straight to the cell phone. If it's the first time I am calling someone, I usually use the office phone first. So on a daily basis I am greeted by the person that answers the phone at your office a couple of times.

My interaction with them sets the tone for my interaction with you.

On occasion, the person answering the phone in your office is bright and cheery. I can't help but take the same tone. They leave me with that warm and fuzzy feeling. I like that feeling. I'll venture a guess that your clients would like that feeling too. When we start our conversation, most often without even realizing it, I feel good about talking to you. I become more engaged in our conversation. I want to talk to you.

You all know the flip side...........

Every so often I get that person that answers the phone and their attitude stinks. It isn't what they say of course, it's how they say it. I'll bet they are busy. I'll bet there is another call coming in right behind mine. I'll bet they got up on the wrong side of the bed. Well guess what.......if I'm your client, I don't care!!

"Thank you for calling XYZ Realty, can you please hold?"

"I ha...click (....ve no problem holding")  (cue elevator music or canned marketing message)

Really? Not even four seconds to confirm that I will in fact hold and that I'm not his son with an emergency?

That's the example I had just ten minutes ago. But I come across different variations of that A LOT. The person's tone when returning to the line was no more friendly, simple concerned with getting me out of their hair. It doesn't leave me in the best frame of mind to start our conversation. I deal with it way more than your clients do, I would imagine. Because of that, I can rebound A-OK and we can still have a great conversation. But can your client? Does that first abrupt voice leave them uneasy and chagrined?

More often, I get somewhere in the middle. But wouldn't you rather I get passed to you with that infectious warmth and cheer?

Agents......who is setting the tone for your initial conversations with your client? Are they setting you up for a great interaction? Brokers.......does the person answering at your office even consider how I feel once I'm passed on? Should it be their job to care?

I say yes. That person answering your phone is your clients first interaction with you. It sets the tone. Hang out of sight today and see what that tone is......

What this is about

Seth Godin, one of the most respected marketers in the country, is holding a special one-day educational event benefiting the Acumen Fund. The Acumen fund is a non-profit global venture fund targeting the four billion people living on less that $4 a day. Its aim is to help build sustainable and scalable organizations that deliver critical goods and services that improve the lives of the poor. We have purchased one highly coveted ticket to this exclusive event for one lucky winner.

At its core, ActiveRain is built on sharing and collaboration; a critical thread woven into the fabric of our culture. For the Project Blogger competition, ActiveRain donated $5,000 to the CARE organization while coaches and judges freely volunteered their time to help new bloggers sustain and grow their business by learning the ropes of Web 2.0.

We believe strongly in the use of video as a medium for delivering your words, your ideas, your homes and your services to the ever increasing Internet audience. By entering the contest you and your video will become part of the growing contribution to ActiveRain that will be used to help others.

In case you have never heard of Seth Godin, (crawl out from under that rock, haha, kidding of course) or even if you have, it was a page in one of his best selling books that planted the seed for what would become ActiveRain. The original notes are scribbled on a page of that book somewhere around the office. Maybe we should find that......
